My Journey to the American Dream

So today was my opportunity to you know, live that American Dream..or at least work towards that dream anyway. If you didn't know what my ultimate goal for my career existence besides making a change and being a great influence for fellow earthlings..lol I want to do Sports Broadcasting (on-air). Many reasons why I'd like to, but simply put .. I love to talk about Sports and I love the game and the notion of Sports.

Well today was the Pac-10 Media Day for Men's College Basketball where it was simply the coaches and top players from the Pac-10 conference answering questions and hyping up what shall take place for the upcoming season. So, when you do stand-ups, you need a great background (atmosphere), have a quick outro if you will that pretty much summarizes the days events for what you could attach to a package (a.k.a a story). The media day took place at the Hilton close to LAX. Long story short, I went to this media day straight after doing an 8-hour shift of 2am to 10am - not like that's excuseable because I knew I was going to the shoot as of yesterday [late afternoon/night]. So I do my stand-up that I can use for my reel, put together a potential package (for my reel), and overall have it critiqued by my trusted, awesome sports producers, whom I love dearly.

I get in front of the camera with that stellar nbc flag (the box on the mic) and that mic...lights from the camera go on, lol and JAM is like a deer caught in some headlights jibber-jabbing. Mind you, I had an idea of what I wanted to say, upgraded the outfit game, but was lagging on the hair and make-up which already made me look lame...but whatever, it's practice, right?
EEERGH, soo wrong..so wrong. I should have never treated it as practice, I should have looked as if I already had the gig and should have written and been more prepared. I should have been looking like the dun-dada in the building. So needless to say, I looked like a goofy goober flubbing over what was suppose to be a quick stand-up while Jim Hill (CBS sports - that I just realized at the end of this blog that Pat Tobin actually worked with him back in the day) was only several footsteps away doing his own thing, carrying his own convos while watching me flub. Thank goodness the photographer (camera dude) was cool about it all and gave me his critiques..after all he's been a photog for like the past 40 years. lol, if there's one thing I can do RIGHT - is most certainly listen to my elders that know what they're talking about. So that guy certainly um, critiqued me...lol, definitely wasn't feeling JAMtastic.

But I had to step back..this was my SERIOUS reality check. It's most certainly not as easy as it looks and I have a greater respect and appreciation for it. Even though, I've done the sports news on my college radio station, hosted/co-produced/edited my sports show for my college tv station, lol and even most recently - my JAMtastic Blogs... plus I had great people I had to give me some insight like Shelley Smith (ESPN), Bonnie Bernstein (CBS sports) and some anchors/reporters from knbc and teleumundo sports, and writers/producers...I thought I could handle it since after all I could envision myself doing it, so I could do it.

.......Boy was I wrong and looked like a complete jackhole and embarrassed myself. However, I needed to be mortified and knocked down to drive the point home of what needs to really happen. I was happy with the fact that I was no longer a nerdy intern that wanted to do sports broadcasting, but refused to do a stand-up because I absolutely wasn't 'there'. I feel more comfortable in front of the camera, but from now on I have to be the most glamified from now on - no exceptions to the rule.

Even though it's against what the younger JAM would do, I have to care about my appearance unfortunately. lol, but we'll have some fun with it. So now that I made it into this exclusive party, I have to work my way up. I have the opportunity to learn so much and do so much that the time is now. I can't wait, I can't say, well I'll do that in a couple of months. Before I know it, a couple of months will be a couple of years. I refuse to wait and most importantly, I refuse to lose. So, what's next?

LOL!..well, lets see, I have a hair appointment tomorrow afternoon, then need to figure out a JAMtastic way to keep my hair on point all the time..and invest in one of those thingys called a flat iron..yeah my pockets haven't been able to afford those things, but the time is now. So viva la rasa and seize the day..or better yet, carpe diem ..as the italians say.. 'Goditi il momento'...
So I've got my hair appt...then in a couple of weeks, a JAMtastic photoshoot shall take place, make-up game along with some purchases of some real make-up tools..lol..other than that. It's a new day, it's a new moment..live it or go kick rocks.. lmao.

..but hey look on the bright side, lol when I woke up from my massive nap/bedtime (since my schedule has to be ass backwards).. my good buddy brooke sent this to me..lmao..plus i'm sooo ready for a fantastic friday that happens to be halloween..lmao...

Since today was pretty hilarious and as my horoscope put it ..I had an 'edu-tainment' kind of day.. I'll occasionally share my progress and my journey to getting to the top..lol as my pocket doesn't reflect such success..lol, we'll all live this together in the jamtastic arena.. hope everyone had a great day. If you're not happy, find something that does and be amazing at it. Whenever you question anything: Let me tell you a moment I had, My mentor, Pat Tobin (R.I.P.) ...before she passed, I saw her at her Tribute Party while she was very sick with her cancer, she was even losing her voice. She looked sick as if she should be at home - - away from the chaos of dealing with people. But she was there, with a smile and in amazingly great spirits. Point is, if a woman like that can smile through her pain and affect others in the most positive light, so can you.....

This woman is an inspiration, motivator, mentor, great friend, and my top supporter. The tribute party was for her and to raise money for her scholarship she created..

this was the last time I saw Pat before she passed, June 10th, 2008..which interestingly enough was only a couple of days if not exactly to the date..my grandfather (another influential person in my world) had passed away 10 years ago...
